Thomas Willis Jones had a hand in naming his children. In the case of his daughter Schley (pronounced “Sly”), Tom chose to recommend his admiration for a Naval Admiral in the Spanish American War. Schley was, in fact, named after Winfield Scott Schley, who was a rear admiral and hero of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Clearly, Tom Jones displayed a charming disregard for the sex of the child he was naming.
Sidenote: Schley Jones died from infection after giving birth to son Boodler.
