Stone wells ran on gasoline engines that went very, very slow to gain mechanical advantage to pump the well with. They were 20 feet in diameter. This picture was taken on the Lee Ranch. There is a complete one at the Griffin.
The last engine they pumped it with was a flathead V8. A guy name Buzz Brownfield got his spur hung in the belt and it beat him to death.
